Optical Illusion Steps

Clay Tiles

5th graders were given a slab of clay (that was lightly covered for a day or two to firm up). They cut their slabs into a tile. They drew their design on the clay with a pencil or sharpened wooden tool, then carved their design with various clay tools. Once they finished, they put them up to dry. After fired, they glazed with various colors. We fired again. Some students added metallic paint for finishing touches.

(Holes were optional if students wanted to hang their tiles on a wall.)

 

 

Kindergarten Expressive Line Art

We discussed how line can be used to show movement and expression in art. Students decided which profile pose they wanted for their artwork. Once printed, they cut them out, glued them down, then added various colored lines.

1st Grade Flowers

This is a multiple step project. It took us about 3-4 weeks. It's worth it though. They turned out beautiful!

Step 1) Draw the case and table.

Step 2) Paint with tempera paint. (I allowed them choose only three colors.) Allow to dry.

Step3) Draw stems with a green oil pastel. Remind them to draw the same amount of stems as they plan to draw flowers. Outline vase and table with a black oil pastel.

Step 4) While the paint is drying, I have them begin their flowers. Draw the large flowers.

Step 5) Color flowers using tissue paper & water. Allow to dry.

Step 6) Cut out flowers, then glue to painting.

Step 7) Using colored modeling clay, add the center to the flower. (Hint: glue the modeling clay to the paper.)

4th Grade No Bodies

Students formed a shape for their characters head and added features to the head. They poked a hole in the bottom of their clay. After the sculptures were fired, they added color with Mayco Stroke & Coat glazes.

3rd Grade Owls

3rd graders made pinch pots, then turned them upside down to create owls. They were allowed to be as creative as they wanted to be. Some added food, cell phones, head phones, and even top hats. They added color with Mayco Stroke & Coat glazes.

2nd Grade Monsters

2nd graders made pinch pots, then turned them in their said to create clay monsters. After they were fired, they added color with Mayco Stroke & Coat glazes.
