Aboriginal Dot Painting





















Objectives:
  • Identify Australia on the world map
  • Identify Aboriginal artwork
  • Understand layering techniques using paint
  • Understand the Elements of Art: Shape, Color, and Space
  • Understand the Principles of Design: Emphasis, Pattern, Proportion
Vocabulary: Australia, indigenous, Aboriginal art

Materials:
  • 2 Sheets of paper
  • Pencil
  • Tempera paint
  • Paint brushes and cotton swabs
Lesson:
  1. Students paint the entire paper with one or more colors, then let dry.
  2. While drying, the students sketch an object or design on another paper.
  3. Once the background is dry, paint the object.
  4. Using the back of a paintbrush or a q-tip, carefully place dots around the object.
  5. Once the object is dry, add details.
